Erie County was formed in the 1800s after Pennsylvania purchased the Erie Triangle from the U.S. Government in 1792 for approximately $151,000. The new county was then named for Lake Erie and the Eriez Native American Tribe. Erie County continued to grow throughout the 20th Century, during World War II, our workers built everything from airplane bodies to artillery. Erie County grew quickly after the war, with bustling ports and busy rail lines. Shipping and manufacturing thrived, having contributed to an industrial heritage that continues to this day.
